President Chen Qun awards the honorary degree certificate to Prof. Haagerup
On the afternoon of June 24, Prof. Uffe Haagerup received an honorary doctorate from ECNU at the Campus Center on Minhang Campus, and became the first world renowned scholar who had received an honorary doctorate from the University.
At the honorary doctorate award ceremony, President Chen Qun, on behalf of the University Academic Committee, awarded the honorary degree certificate to Prof. Haagerup and then made a speech. Chen spoke highly of Haggerup’s outstanding achievements in the field of operator algebras, fully appreciated his communication and cooperation with ECNU’s Research Center of Operator Algebras, and hoped that he could make more contribution to the development of mathematical discipline of ECNU. Prof. Haagerup expressed his gratitude to ECNU, praised the remarkable achievements made by ECNU in academic research and campus building, and hoped to deepen the cooperation with ECNU.

After the ceremony, a reception party was held for Prof. Haagerup, and more than 20 world famous mathematicians and experts in mathematics from home and abroad, as well as the Science & Technology Counselor of the Danish Consulate General in Shanghai attended the party and expressed their congratulations to Prof. Haagerup.
A scene from the ceremony.
Prof. Haagerup is a world famous mathematician. He first achieved recognition, and then fame, for his ability to solve very difficult challenges left open by other distinguished mathematicians. Most of his work has been in the field of operator algebra, territories known as “Banach space” and other problems in pure mathematics that have important applications in quantum field theory. Prof. Haagerup now works as an academician of theRoyal DanishAcademy of Science and Letters, an academician of Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, and a professor of University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He had worked as the editor in chief for the world top mathematical journal, Acta Mathematics, for years.
President Chen (R1), Prof. Wang Jianpan (L1), a renowned Chinese mathematician and former ECNU President, and Prof. Lin Huaxin (R2), a world leading mathematician in operator algebras, chat with Prof. Haagerup at the reception party.
Due to his outstanding contribution to the operator algebras, Prof. Haagerup had been invited to deliver a 45-minute report and a 1-hour report in the 1986 and 2002 International Mathematical Congress respectively and received European Latsis Prize, an annual award from theEuropean Science Foundationfor “outstanding and innovative contributions in a selected field of European research”. Prof. Haagerup has kept a long and stable cooperative relationship with the Research Center of Operator Algebras of ECNU for years.
The honorary doctorate degree system in China was first established by Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Academic Degrees in February, 1980. According to the regulation, only those who have made remarkable achievements to the human society can be awarded honorary doctorates and the degree awarding should go through a strict audit procedure from the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. Prof. Haagerup’s awarding of an honorary doctorate is the first time that ECNU has awarded an honorary doctorate to a world famous scholar in the past 30 years.
