ECNU debate team wins silver in 2013 World Varsity Mandarin Debate Tournament.

 

The debate team of ECNU won silver in 2013 World Varsity Mandarin Debate Tournament held in Penang of Malaysia on March 2.

 

Under the guidance of Prof. Wu Gang from School of Education Science, the team made up of Luo Hongkun from School of Public Administration, Wang Yuanli from Department of Politics, Li Ruyi from School of Education Science, Zhang Xiaoming from School of Social Development, Wang Wenhao from Department of History, and Hu Jiarui form School of Foreign Languages, went all out into the finals of the 9-day tournament and won the silver medal after two-hour heated debate with the host team from Malaysia University on March 2.

2013 World Varsity Mandarin Debate Tournament kicked off on February 22 and lasted for 9 day. Participant teams included 32 national and regional teams from Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan as well as Australia, Britain and Malaysia etc. After defeating teams from Taiwan Tsinghua University, Australia National University, Yunnan University, University of Macau, and Hong Kong University in the first and second rounds, ECNU debate team successfully entered into the finals. After several rounds of fierce debates on the topic of “how people should look upon the world: optimistically or pessimistically” in the finals, they lost the contest to the host team from Malaysia University and won the silver medal.

“It’s a pity that we lost in the finals,” said Luo Hongkun, Best Debater of the tournament, “Although the completion is fierce and even cruel, the way we adhere to our values and world outlook, and the persistence we have shown during the debate are significant.”

World Varsity Mandarin Debate Tournament, one of the most famous international Chinese debates in the world, is sponsored by the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia. Each year, 32 participant teams from universities of Malaysia, Singapore, British, Australia, Russia, Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao compete in the tournament.
