ECNU to Commemorate the Birth Centenary of Ge Baoquan

On February 15, 2013 falls the birth centenary of Great China University alumnus Ge Baoquan, a famous translator and expert in Russian-Soviet Literature. To commemorate Mr. Ge’s 100th birth anniversary, ECNU will hold a series of activities this year.

On January 31, Assistant President Pei Xiaoqian and relevant directors from the Cultural Office, the Archives, the Publishing House, Office of Liasion, School of Foreign Languages, and School of Design of the University visited Mr. Pan Qinglin, a friend of Ge Baoquan’s and a retired professor of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, as well as Ge’s nephew, Mr. Sun Ge. During the visit, they preliminarily discussed the preparations for commemorating the centenary of Mr. Ge’s birth. To successfully hold the activities, the Cultural Office held a special meeting to discuss plans and details of the commemoration after the visit.

 

In 1913, Ge Baoquan was born in Dongtai County of Jiangsu Province. In 1932, he graduated from Great China University, the predecessor of ECNU. During his fruitful life, Mr. Ge first worked as an editor for newspapers and publishing houses such as Xinhua Daily, Shanghai Life Bookstore and Times Publishing House before 1949. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he began to work successively as an official in the Embassy of P.R. China in (former) Soviet Union, Deputy Secretary of the Sino-Soviet Friendship Association, Vice President of the Chinese Research Association of Soviet Literature, and etc.

 

As a prestigious translator and expert in Russian-Soviet Literature, Mr. Ge has written abundant works about Russian-Soviet Literature including Lectures on Russian-Soviet Literature and completed excellent  translations such as Selected Poems of Pushkin, Selected Poems of Shevchenko and Gorky on Literature. Those works and translations have become text books for most Chinese to know about the Russian Literature.

 

With brilliant works and translations of Russian-Soviet Literature, Mr, Ge has won lots of awards in translation and literature from home and abroad. In February 1987, Université de Paris VIII and Moscow State University awarded him honorary doctor respectively because of his fantastic contribution to the introduction of the Russian-Soviet Literature to the Chinese people.
