The establishment of Shanghai Municipal Institute for Lifelong Education (SMILE) was selected as one of the 10 most important events of Chinese adult education in 2012 according to the newly published 2012 Top 10 Events of Chinese Adult Education.
To summarize the achievements of Chinese adult education in the past year, the Center of Lifelong Education and Study of the Chinese Adult Education Association launched an activity to select the 10 most influential events that most promoted the development of Chinese adult education in 2012. The establishment of SMILE was selected in the list.
SMILE was established by ECNU with the commission from Shanghai Municipality on July 24, 2012. To promote the innovation and development of native lifelong education, SMILE is committed to build itself into a cooperative, open and dynamic lifelong education institute of international influence with resources from universities, government, enterprises and communities. As the first institute specializing in lifelong education research, SMILE has six major functions, namely, scientific research, consultation, evaluation service, information service, international exchange and capacity building.
