Warning System for Poor Students takes Effect

09/24/2012

ECNU's Warning System can target poor students in time.

ECNU’s Warning System for Poor Students, the first warning system for poor college students in China, after one-year test-run, is officially launched in September as the new school year begins.

Developed by ECNU, the intelligence system can not only target poor students by tracking students’ daily expenses on their campus e-card, but also keep track of students’ part-time jobs on campus.

The system will raise the alarm if students cut off too much on their meals or spend too much time on part-time jobs. When the system alarms, ECNU Aid Center will consult those students by texting them as well as asking for more detailed information from their departments. If those students are really in living difficulties, special care including financial assistance will go to them.

Poor students in ECNU can apply for various aids including tuition waivers, loans, subsidies, some free daily necessities or more opportunities for campus part-time jobs, but some students do have difficulty in their livings are too self-respecting to ask for help. With the Warning System, poor students can get help even without application.

As the first warning system for poor college students in China, the system won wide praise from the public and it will help to allocate the financial subsidies in a more fair and reasonable way so as to promote a sound system for helping poor students.

According to Wang Zhi, director of ECNU's Work-Study Center, the university’s upgraded information management system lays the groundwork for the establishment of the Warning System. In ECNU, all students' family background and their financial information such as grants, stipends or subsidized loans are well-sorted in databases.
