This year's "Glory & Strength: Top Ten People Touching Shanghai" was unveiled on September 19, and two of them are from ECNU. Prof. Bao Qifan, Dean of ECNU's Academy of International Transport & Logistics, and Liu Xiang, a well-known hurdler and also a graduate student of ECNU's School of Physical Education & Health Care won the honor.
Prof. Bao received the honor at the awarding ceremony. Of the winners, the reason for Prof. Bao's winning is his contribution to innovative technologies for cargo handling. Nicknamed as "a never stop inventor" and "the cargo-handling king", Prof. Bao has invented some 140 technologies of cargo handling and won several awards in international invention exhibitions. At the end of last year, the container label system made by Prof. Bao’s team became the international standard officially, and he became the first Chinese who has ever created standards in international field of logistics and the Internet of things. At present, he is carrying out an innovative research on The Site Selection & Construction Mechanism of New Port Area for Shanghai Port with his team.
Liu Xiang, the first Chinese athlete to achieve the "triple crown" of athletics: World Record Holder, World Champion and Olympic Champion, did not attend the awarding ceremony because of the injury on his Achilles tendon, and his coach Sun Haiping accepted the award on his behalf. When delivering the acceptance speech on behalf of Liu Xiang., Sun was almost choked. Sun was very proud of Liu's winning of this honor, and said, "Liu Xiang has undergone too much hardships and gained many honors as well, but what moves me most is his spirit of never give up."
Not only the two winners from ECNU attracted much attention, Mr. Qian Gurong, a 93-year old professor of ECNU and a special award presenter for postman Ye Qidong, another winner of the honor, also won great applause and welcome at the ceremony. Prof. Qian's friendship with Ye and his speech on Ye's story of winning respect and achieving success through hard work at an ordinary post moved all people at the ceremony.
Launched by Publicity Department of CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee and Shanghai Spiritual Civilization Construction Committee Office, "Glory & Strength: Top Ten People Touching Shanghai" selects the city's ten most inspiring individuals or groups and live broadcasts an award-presenting ceremony every year since 2011.
