New York University (Shanghai) has been established by East China Normal University and New York University. The ground-breaking ceremony was held at Lujiazui on March 28th, 2011. Mayor Han Zheng of Shanghai Municipal Government, Vice Minister of Education Hao Ping, and Deputy Party Secretary of Shanghai Yin Yicui, Member of CPC Shanghai Standing Committee and Party Secretary of Pudong New District Xu Lin, Vice Mayor Shen Xiaoming, and Director of Pudong New District Government Jiang Liang, together with teacher and student representatives of East China Normal University and New York University, all attended the ceremony. Our Chancellor Zhang Jishun presided over the ceremony. Our President Yu Lizhong and president of New York University made keynote speeches, expressing the wish of making New York University (Shanghai) a model of intercultural communications and educational cooperation in the process of globalization. Vice Mayor Shen Xiaoming also made a brilliant speech.
Before the ground-breaking ceremony, a cooperation agreement was signed. Our vice President Chen Qun presided over the ceremony. On behalf of each party, Director of Shanghai Education Bureau Xue Mingyang, vice Director of Pudong New District Zhang Endi, our President Yu Lizhong, and president of New York University all signed on the agreement.
New York University (Shanghai) has been established as the first co-founded international university between China and the U.S. It is aimed at becoming a first-level research-oriented university with modern university system in the near future.
It is reported that high-level financial experts training program will be initiated in 2012. Meanwhile, dual-master programs will be carried out in many disciplines. The first undergraduate program will be held since the September of 2013. Students enrolled can take advantage of the Internet to get distance education from New York, Shanghai, and Abu Dhabi. It will be significant for us to learn the school-running concept and experience from the first-class university, and to explore the modern system in talent training, scientific research, social contribution, and institution administration.
