In accordance with the Interim Regulations on State Key Laboratory Construction and Administration of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) of China, East China Normal University (ECNU) is seeking an internationally recognized thought leader to direct the State Key Laboratory of Estuary and Coastal Research (SKLEC) at ECNU. The university encourages and welcomes qualified candidates to submit their applications.

 

SKLEC was prepared with the approval from the former State Planning Commission in 1989 and established formally in December 1995 through a comprehensive assessment. The laboratory is currently supervised by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST).

 

ECNU is one of the national key universities directly under the Ministry of Education of China. ECNU is also a national "211 Project" and "985 Project" University. The two projects enable the university receive a significant special funding support from central government and Shanghai municipal government.

 

SKLEC focus on basic research and applied research on estuarine and coastal sciences with three core research areas, which are (1) estuarine evolution and estuarine sedimentation dynamics; (2) coastal dynamic geomorphology and dynamic sedimentary process; and (3) estuarine and coastal ecology and environment.

 

1. Candidacy Requirements

l        The candidate must be able to work full time in the laboratory, no matter he/she holds a Chinese nationality.

l        The candidate must have gained recognized academic achievements and established a good reputation in the international academic community.

l        The candidate must show strong capability in organization, management and coordination.

l        The candidate must know the development trend of estuarine and coastal research and have a long term strategic vision.

l        The candidate younger than 55 year-old is preferred.

 

2. Director’s Responsibilities

l        The director is fully responsible in making the laboratory development plan and organizing the implementation of the plan. The director is also responsible to ensure the laboratory the leading position in the estuarine and coastal research community in China.

l        The director will establish a mechanism and form a good atmosphere with which talented scientists are attracted to work in the laboratory and young scientists in the laboratory are well trained. The ultimate goal is to form research teams and gain good international reputation.

l        The director will organize and promote the applications for key research projects both at home and international programs. Under the director’s leadership, the laboratory will be able to achieve academic results recognized internationally.

l        The director will strengthen the cooperation and exchanges with domestic and international organizations, through which the laboratory improves the research capability and increase the influence in the estuarine and coastal research community.

l        The director will make effort to improve the operation and administration level of the laboratory.

 

3. The University Provides:

l        Excellent work environment and research facilities for the director. The director will have relatively independent personnel and financial management power.

l        A full time director assistant to help daily management of the laboratory.

l        Good salary benefit. The salary and benefit shall match the top level in the national and local standard for talents and can be negotiated.

l        House purchasing subsidies and settle-down subsidies for the director. The university will provide the starting fund to support the director’s research work in the first few years. The university will also offer a job for the director’s spouse and help the children to go to school if there are such needs.

 

4. Candidate Material Required

l        A detailed resume, including date of birth, place of birth, current nationality, education experience, work and research experience, list of publications, and other relative contribution. In addition, summary of research projects involved, important international academic activities involvement and positions in major academic societies, journals and organizations should also included.

l        Brief information of your family members (wife and children).

l        Work proposal as a director of SKLEC and goals to be achieved.

l        Personal academic documents: photocopies of the academic certificate, degree certificate, professional (job) title certificate, and publication citation record. Copies of five refereed journal articles which could represent your research achievement, and copies of scientific and technological achievements award certificates.

l        Letters of recommendation from three peer scholars (one letter from your employer organization, and two letters from outside organization);

l        Basic information of family members.
