Our President Yu Lizhong headed a delegation of six people to visit Uganda from February 21st to 23rd. We met the Chinese ambassador to Uganda, signed cooperation memorandum with the famous university in Eastern Africa – Makerere University, visited Ugandan Ministries of Education and Physical Education, and had discussion with the local leaders of Chinese organizations on cooperation issues.
The delegation arrived at Uganda on the afternoon of February 21st. Director of the Politics Division of our Ugandan Embassy Xu Jianguo and Senior Administrative Assistant Martha Muwanguzi of Makerere University received us at the airport.
President Yu introduced our goal for this visit and our strategic thinking on responding to our national policies to Ambassador Sun Heping and Counselor Wang Zeshan, expressing that we are willing to become the basis for Sino-Uganda educational cooperation. Su Heping spoke highly for our internationalization strategy and showed the willingness of selecting African Masters of Education and Chinese National Scholarship winners to support and to provide service to the cooperation with Uganda. The two parties both thought that our university will play an important role under Chinese policies towards Africa.
Makerere University is a first-class university in eastern Africa, which has nurtured many leaders of African countries. On the morning of February 22nd, the delegation visited Makerere University. In the witness of Ambassador Sun Heping, our President Yu Lizhong and President Venansius Barya Baryamureeba of Makerere University signed the cooperative memorandum and received the interviews of the local media.
This is the first cooperation agreement that Makerere University has signed with Chinese university. The local media commented that it would be a landmark to indicate the real start of Sino-Ugandan Cooperation in the field of higher education.
In the afternoon that day the delegation visited Ugandan Ministry of Education and Ministry of Physical Education, meeting the vice minister in charge of higher education Dr. Hon. Mwesigwa-Rukutana and introducing our cooperation ideas to him. They expressed great interest for our suggestions.
On February 23rd our delegation met the representatives of local Chinese organizations. The two parties exchanged opinions on promoting Chinese culture in Uganda.
