Associate Professor Li Zhen of our State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research, and his co-worker thought that wars were the cause of the fires at that time. They published a paper on Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) on July 14th, 2009, conjecturing the old point and opening a new perspective.
