Forum on Sino-US Relations in Honor of the Thirtieth Anniversary titled “Looking Back and Looking Forward into the Future: Contemporary World and Sino-US Relations” was held at ECNU on October 10th, 2009. President Yu Lizhong, Deputy Consul-general of American Consulate-general in Shanghai Mr. Christopher Beede, ex-ambassador of America in Pakistan Mr. Nicholas Platt and many other people were invited to the forum. It was hosted by our Center of American Study, Research Institution of International Relations and Regional Development, and American Consulate-general in Shanghai. The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Jin Hengshan, vice Dean of School of Foreign Languages and vice director of Centre of American Study.
President Yu Lizhong made a brilliant speech, pointing out that ECNU is very strong in the field of international relation researches. Many teachers and students from the Department of History, Department of Politics, Department of International Relation, and School of Foreign Languages have been doing excellent job these years, making substantial achievements. This forum would further promote our potential in the area. Moreover, Yu Lizhong congratulated the Centre of American Study on its new founding and efforts to this forum. Meanwhile, he expressed his thanks to the American Consulate-general to help host this forum.
Deputy Consul-general of American Consulate-general in Shanghai Mr. Christopher Beede also made a thank-you speech to this forum. Then he used his personal experience to tell the great changes of China in the past thirty years, which deeply influenced the Sino-US relations. He thought that America and China both made contributions to the peace and development of the world, and that their relations are increasingly closer as the processing of globalization. He hoped that scholars could further explore how to strengthen the cooperation and all-dimensional development between the two countries from many other perspectives. And he confirmed that the American Consulate-general in Shanghai would support such kind of academic activities in the long run.
This forum focused on the topic “Looking Back and Looking Forward into the Future: Contemporary World and Sino-US Relations”. Nicolas Platt had visited China in 1972 accompanying President Nixon. He made a keynote speech, and shared his precious video with the people present.
