President of SPIE and doctor of Brookhaven State key laboratory Ralph B. James, and executive president Dr. Eugene Arthurs visited our university on the invitation of Chu Junhao, dean of our School of Information Science and vice chairman of SPIE (China), on March 18th. Our President Yu Lizhong met them on March 19th. Accompanied by Academician Chu Junhao, Dr. James visited our School of Information Science on March 21st. And then he gave a lecture to us and had a look at the key laboratory of polarized materials and device founded by Ministry of Education at our university.
Dr. James divided his lecture into 2 parts. One was titled “SPIE-The International Society for Optics and Photonics”, in which Dr. James made a brief introduction to the journals of SPIE and elaborated on the operational mechanism of related activities the students took part in. The other part was under the title “Cadmium Zinc Telluride X-ray and Gamma Radiation Detectors: Past, Present and Future”. Dr. James explained the features, structures and underlying theories of X-ray and Gamma radiation detectors from current applications. Many professors, youth teachers and post-graduates listened to the lecture, and asked some questions. Dr. James answered them in detail.
After the lecture, Dr. James watched the key laboratory of polarized materials and device founded by Ministry of Education at our university. Chu Junhao introduced the current situation, research direction and special equipment to him.
