Learning Chinese language, playing Tai Chi, practicing Chinese calligraphy and taking tour of Shanghai, 127 British undergraduates came to ECNU attending a three-week “Study China Program”.
“Study China Program 2009 –British Undergraduates’ China Trip” opened up on March 30th in our N. Zhongshan Rd. Campus. President Yu Lizhong, Gavin Anderson, consul of British Consulate-General in Shanghai and Andy Taylor, the Program Coordinator from Manchester University attended the opening ceremony held by Huang Meixu, deputy director of International Exchange Division. “Study China Programme” is jointly funded by British DIUS (the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills) and the Scottish Government for British full time undergraduates to come to study, live and explore in China. It is an important action of British Government in purposely cultivating its new generation of elite in the diplomatic and business circles. Following the huge success of “Study China Programmes 2008 –British Undergraduates’ China Trip”, the programme chooses ECNU again this year as a host institution. From March 28th to April 17th, 127 British students will spend an unforgettable time in Shanghai and ECNU.
ECNU has elaborately arranged a variety of activities for the British students, which include lessons of Chinese language, calligraphy, painting and Tai Chi; visit to Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Urban Planning Hall and other cultural landscapes; exploring local conditions and customs in Hongzhou and other waterside towns. In order for British students to have a quick first hand insight into economic development and educational reform in China, visits to several foreign funded enterprises, Sino-foreign equity joint ventures, large state-owned enterprises and secondary schools in Shanghai are also arranged. The students also have opportunities to hear a series of lectures given by some well-known ECNU scholars on China’s economy and Shanghai urban planning etc., to get a deeper understanding of China’s current situation and future development.
