Our Centre for Australian Studies held a forum on Contemporary Australian Literature on March 19th. The famous Australian writer Nicholas Jose, and publisher and writer Professor Ivor Indyk attended it on invitation and made brilliant speeches. Many students and teachers of School of Foreign Languages also took part in the forum.
During the forum, Professor Jose looked back to his pleasant teaching experience at ECNU, and then introduced the development tendency of Australian literature from his own writings. Professor Indyk told us how he achieved his success, exploring the trends in contemporary Australian literature. Chen Hong, director of our Centre for Australian Studies, presided over the forum, and discussed with them on cooperation and exchanges. Many students participated in the discussion actively.
Professor Jose, ex-chairman of International PEN (IPEN) in Australia, now is chief professor of Literature Writing Department in University of Western Sydney, and chief editor of Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature. He had given instructions in 1987 at ECNU. After that he had been a cultural counselor at Australian Embassy in China, providing substantial help to our centre. And he is going to Harvard University for a research program on Australia.
