Approved by East China Normal University, Centre for American Studies was founded at the end of last term. The opening ceremony was held in our School of Foreign Languages on February 25th. President assistant Fan Jun, dean of School of Foreign Language Zhang Chunbai, director of Centre for American Studies Fei Chunfang, Consul Tom Cooney of the Department of Press of the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai, and its Consul Alys Spensley of Culture Division all attended the ceremony. Some students of our Department of History and some members of our School of Foreign Languages also took part in it.
Fan Jun made a welcome speech on its founding, expressing our sincere appreciation for the hard work of teachers from School of Foreign Languages, Department of History and School of Public Administration, in particular, the contribution made by Professor Paul Levine. Our Centre of American Studies is in our School of Foreign Languages, whose dean, Professor Zhang Chunbai has been giving substantial of support to it. Its establishment also gets great help from the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai, whose consul Tom Cooney welcomes it warmly, wishing to cooperate with this centre and to promote the development of American Studies in our university and even in Shanghai.
