Our University Create "Tube Monkeys" Successfully

09/04/2008
Scientific Research Team of Xishuanbanna Primates Centre, led by Doctor Sun Qiang of our key laboratory of brain functional genomics, had created China’s 1st “Tube Monkeys” successfully. This result has been published in the latest Proceedings of the National Academy of Science in USA. It will make a solid foundation for the researches on brain science and trans-gene animals.
Thanks to our improvement on the key technology, the highest success rate of making tube monkeys is next to 64%, far higher than the average rate of 25%¬35% in other parts of the world. It marks that our brain functional genomics is in a leading position in the world.

Corcopithecidae of Primates is quite like human beings in hereditary structure, anatomical form, psychological actions and biomedical characteristics. They are sophisticated and complicated in their higher nervous activity and actions. Therefore, they are the ideal objectives for researches on brain function, pro-clinical experiments of new medicine, and trial animals of safety evaluation. The monkeys our researchers used are very popular in the medical and psychological researches, which have been selected to go to the outer space for the 1st time.

It is reported that tube monkeys are the precondition and basis for making trans-gene monkeys. And this technology was in the hands of few foreign laboratories. Although China had some researches on creating tube monkeys in the 1990s, there was no success. 7 tube monkeys had been made this time, all of which are healthy and lovely. Lele, a biggest tube monkey, born on February 4th, 2007, is now 1 and half year old.
