At the beginning of a new term, an enlarged meeting of the party committee of East China Normal University (ECNU) had been held from August 26 to 27. Secretary Zhang Jishun addressed in the meeting.
Secretary Zhang Jishun pointed out in her speech at first that to build university culture is of great significance for a high-level university. She thought that 1st-class university culture is the spiritual pillar of 1st-class university, and so a 1st-class university must have 1st class university culture. Therefore, if we want to make our university better, we should fully exert the great influence of university culture on reform and development of our university and try hard to catch up with the 1st-class universities on cultural side.
Secretary Zhang thought that the reconstruction of ECNU’s spiritual culture and creation of our system had been strengthened out these years when we had clarified our university-running goals, renewed our conceptions of running university and deepened our reform on administrative structure. However, we are confronted with quite a few problems and challenges in the process of constructing university culture. To solve those problems, secretary Zhang gave suggestions on 3 aspects. Firstly, we should enhance our awareness of building university culture. Secondly, we should further our understanding and reflection on our cultural traditions and try to use more advanced university cultures in and aboard for reference. Thirdly, we should improve our teacher education, discipline construction, teacher corps building, creative talents training and internationalization.
In the gist speech, secretary Zhang gave requirements in 4 aspects around “Deepen into university culture construction, so as to provide spiritual support for higher-level university building.” Firstly we should fully display the fine traditions of ECNU, widely using the advanced university cultures in and aboard for references. Secondly, referring to the requirements of high-level university, we should reconstruct our university’s spirit and positively explore the university-running objective and conception of high-level ones under the guidance of the scientific development outlook. Thirdly, we should make creations of structure and system, actively looking for kind of university’s institutional culture suitable for high-level ones. Fourthly, we should clarify the substantial purport and content of university cultural construction, further bettering its development plan.
According to the speech of secretary Zhang, people present make serious group discussion on university’s spiritual culture, structural culture and environmental culture. Vice president Zhuang Huiming gave a report on regulating school-running affairs. Vice president Wang Xiaoming, Chen Qun, director of Personnel Division Chen Guoliang, and dean of School of Education Science Ding Gang made speeches respectively on “Thinking on our university’s subject crossing” “Crossing subjects – an important path for the leap-forward development of ECNU” “Current condition, problems, and solutions of improving teachers’ quality” “The direction of the change and reform of teacher education” and so on.
President Yu Lizhong made the conclusion. He had not only seen the bottleneck of the development of our university in a cultural perspective, explaining his views on building a positive, grandeur and harmonious university culture, he also analyzed in detail the unique position and influence of the leaders of schools and departments. He encouraged leaders at all ranks to foster a university spirit matched with high-level university in daily work. Firstly, we should be board-minded with great aspiration. Secondly, we should pursue a future of excellence bravely. Thirdly, we should be open enough in an all-embracing manner. Fourthly, we should root for academic learning and creativity. Fifthly, we should see people as the most important element, and create harmonious cultural atmosphere.
