Afforestation has been a lasting Chinese tradition since ancient times. On March 12, 2021, ECNU leaders planted 8 filamental flowering crabs together with student and teacher volunteers from Guang Hua College, in commemoration of China’s 43^rd Tree-Planting Day.

ECNU has long been known as a “Garden University”. With a greening area of 560,000 square meters, its two campuses are also listed as “Garden Institutions of Shanghai”. The Zhongbei Campus was rated as the model national greening unit as early as 2004. Currently, the greening areas make up 27.33% and 44.07% respectively in the university’s Zhongbei Campus and Minhang Campuses.
