The frequent occurrence of extreme rainstorms and mountain torrents in arid and semi-arid regions of the world are a consequence of climate change and the increasing impacts of human activities. The vast majority of torrential rain and flash flooding events (87%) and disaster deaths (97%) occurred in low- and middle-income countries and regions. What can be done to cope with rising natural disasters in the future?
On 7 March, the international academic journal Nature published the latest paper accomplished by Prof. Yin Jie’s team from ECNU. The paper titled “Flash floods: why are more of them devastating the world’s driest regions?” was published online (Nature 2023,615:212-215), with ECNU as the first author affiliation among other institutions.
The article was a co-production with affiliations including University of Hong Kong, Finnish Meteorological Institute, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Loughborough University, University of Birmingham, Institute of Geographical Sciences and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, University of Michigan, Delft University of Technology and Capital Normal University.
