On October 13th, Mei Bing, Chairperson of the University Council, met with Walter Baluja García, Minister of Higher Education of Cuba and María Victoria Villavicencio Plasencia, Director of International Relations in the Ministry of Higher Education of Cuba.
Mei Bing extended a warm welcome to the delegation to start the meeting. She pointed out that China and Cuba have established a deep friendship regardless of the geographical distance between them. ECNU attaches great importance to cooperation and exchange with Cuba. Since the signing of a cooperation agreement between ECNU and the University of Havana in December 2022, the two sides have continuously deepened cooperation in disciplines such as foreign language and literature, Marxist research, life sciences, marine sciences and so on. ECNU is willing to further its cooperation with Cuban universities and welcome more Cuban students, teachers, and researchers to visit and study at ECNU.
Minister Walter Baluja García expressed his gratitude for the warm reception. He stated that this is his first visit to China and is very pleased to visit ECNU. Over the past 60 years, since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Cuba, educational cooperation has always been an important component of China-Cuba relations. With the active promotion of the two governments, educational exchanges between China and Cuba have become increasingly frequent, and the scale of student and teacher exchanges has been expanding. The Cuban Ministry of Higher Education will continue to support ECNU’s cooperation with Cuban universities, including the University of Havana. He hoped that the exchange and cooperation between the two sides can be elevated to a higher level in the future.
At the meeting, both sides also held detailed discussions on cooperation in areas such as Spanish and Latin American cultures, Marxism and socialist system research, ecology and environment and life sciences.
The Cuban delegation also includes Mileidy Aguirre Díaz, Consul General of the Cuban Consulate General in Shanghai, Li Yun, Assistant to Consul General, and Dionisio Zaldivar Silva, Vice President of the University of Havana, Cuba.
