On August 22, Andrius Baltuška, an academician from the Photonics Institute of the Vienna University of Technology, was appointed as an Honorary Professor at East China Normal University (ECNU).
Qian Xuhong, the president of ECNU, presented the Honorary Professor certificate to Academician Andrius Baltuška. Li Wenxue, deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy Science and Technology, praised Academician Baltuška's outstanding contributions to ultra-intense and ultra-fast laser technology in her speech.
Professor Andrius Baltuška was elected a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 2016. He is an internationally recognized leader in the field of high-intense laser technology and strong-field physics, and his research achievements have been widely acclaimed.
Following the appointment ceremony, Academician Baltuška delivered a lecture entitled Nonlinear optics with femtosecond pulse bursts to the faculty and students.
The lecture provided an in-depth introduction to the technology of generating phase and amplitude-controlled amplified pulse trains, discussed the limitations of energy expansion and the solutions to them, and showcased the cutting-edge progress in parametric frequency conversion in pulse train drive applications. In addition, he also outlined the future development direction of third-order and higher-order resonance nonlinear spectroscopy for professors and students.
After the lecture, Academician Baltuška engaged in extensive discussions with the professors and students, addressing questions about the latest research progress and fundamental issues in the field of ultra-intense and ultrafast laser technology.
Academician Baltuška has long been engaged in cutting-edge research in the fields of generating, measuring, manipulating and interacting with matter using ultrashort light fields.. In recent years, with the full resumption of international cooperation, and based on the long-term, fruitful cooperation between Academician Baltuška and Professor Zeng Heping of the State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy Science and Technology, the two teams successfully developed the first Yb-doped millijoule-level femtosecond laser source in China together. They advanced hybrid laser amplification technology combining broadband fiber seed and solid-state regenerative amplification, achieving millijoule-level hundred-femtosecond laser output. This breakthrough broke the monopoly of foreign high-end ultrafast femtosecond laser products, completely transforming China’s dependence on imported high-end laser sources and instruments. It holds significant importance for entering the global ultrafast laser market, developing new ultrafast laser devices, and forming an internationally leading industrial cluster in ultrafast laser technology.
