On May 24, Cross-Strait youth celebrated the Dragon Boat Festival at ECNU. They immersed themselves in the unique traditions of the Dragon Boat Festival through handicraft workshops and friendly competitions.
The event consisted of three parts: a Dragon Boat Culture Dialogue Salon, a zongzi-making activity, and a fair showcasing traditional customs. The fair, rich in folk cultural elements, offered participants an immersive experience of fun and excitement in Dragon Boat Festival traditions.
At the mugwort hammer and sachet crafting booth, students and their families eagerly gathered to participate in the experience, turning mugwort into fragrant sachets by wrapping it in fabric embroidered with traditional patterns and carefully winding silk threads around it. “This is my first time making a mugwort hammer. Every loop of thread needs to be tied tightly, with close weaving and knotting—it takes real concentration,” said one student participating in the activity. “I want to give this handmade gift to my elders. It not only expresses my heartfelt wishes but also carries the essence of traditional culture.” Many parent-child families also joined in the fun, guided by instructors as they explored the charm of traditional crafts together.
In another interactive area, a lively and spirited “Zongzi Leaf Ping Pong Relay” was in full swing in a joyful atmosphere of friendly competition. Cross-strait youth made joint efforts, using zongzi leaves to create a passage and deliver a ping pong ball to the finish line.
Through these handcrafted activities and engaging games, cross-strait youth have not only gained a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical meaning of the Dragon Boat Festival but also strengthened their emotional connections through shared traditions and collective memories.
