On behalf of the university Vice-president, Wang Rongming, extended a warm welcome to the international student body made up of nearly 100 countries, announcing its progressive measures in international exchanges, mutual cooperation and universal spread of Chinese culture.

This year’s enrollment personifies the already multicultural university; more international diversity is needed worldwide to facilitate wider perspectives, he said. He also encouraged them to study hard and work for success in the future.

The ceremony for the 2017 Fall Semester for the international students is held.

Huang Meixu, director of the International Education Center, briefed the newcomers on the function of the center and said it is always prepared to be of service to international students.

One of the American students studying international relations at ECNU - who calls himself Hu Tianming in Chinese - acted as represenative of the international student body; he gave a speech at the ceremony about his overall experience at ECNU, whereby he urged them to actively participate in cultural and social activities on campus. He expressed in his speech about the importance of learning Chinese language and culture through interaction with others.

“I hope every one of you can achieve self-worth, create beautiful memories, make friends from all over the world and make common progress here,” said so-called Tianming.

According to the numbers it was a remarkable year: ECNU enrolled more than 2,500 international students for the 2017 Fall Semester, which set an unprecedented mark for international study enrollment rate at one semester. Statistics also proved that a proportional majority of those sailed from Europe and the United States. Many people believe the notable increase is attributed to expansion in international education and sustained development of English-taught classes for postgraduate programs.

ECNU remains amongst China’s top 10 universities for total amount of international students.

The International Education Center has played a significant role in expanding international, educational cooperation between ECNU and its global counterparts - the likes of a propeller to build the university into a world renowned institution in higher education.
