Shangai New York University (NYU Shanghai), the first Sino-US joint venture university, was officially founded on October 15, and it will soon begin admissions for its first group of students for the 2013 fall semester.
NYU Shanghai, located in the Lujiazui financial area of Pudong New Area, was established by New York University and East China Normal University (ECNU). Graduates of NYU Shanghai will get a double bachelor's degree from both the local branch and the New York-based main campus.
Yu Lizhong, former president of ECNU, was named NYU Shanghai's first president. Jeffery Lehman, former president of Cornell University and current director and founding dean of the Peking University School of Transnational Law, is the university’s executive vicepresident and CEO.
The founding of NYU Shanghai has drawn global attention. Acoording to experts, NYU Shanghai is expected to develop a new model for China-foreign cooperation in higher education and may herald an era of more international students coming to China and give a greater choice to domestic students.
“NYU Shanghai will be a 'melting pot' for cultivating innovative talents from China and the rest of the world," said Yu Lizhong at the founding ceremony of the campus on October 16.

NYU Shanghai is expected to welcome its first group of 300 undergraduates next fall, and about half of the students will be Chinese applying through the national college entrance exam, or Gaokao, and the rest will come from around the world. The tuition for Chinese mainland undergraduates will be about 100,000 yuan (US$15,948) a year , and overseas students will pay according to the tuition of New York University.
Designed to be a comprehensive research university, NYU Shanghai will have a curricular system of NYU-style, and the university’s core courses will cover languages, writing, social and cultural basics, mathematics, and science. Future students will be able to spend one to three semesters on NYU’s global academic centers and more than 10 other campuses in New York, London, Paris, and otherfamous cities.
According to John Sexton, NYU Shanghai will follow the same or higher standards in recruiting faculty from worldwide. A number of high-caliber teachers,including winners of Nobel and Pulitzer prizes, will teach at the Shanghai campus. The university’s teacher-to-student ratio will reach as high as 1:8, twice that of Chinese colleges and universities. NYU and ECNU will carry out joint scientific research invarious fields to attract more talented people to join NYU Shanghai.
