The Biology Museum of ECNU was built in 1952 and moved to re-exhibit on the Minhang campus in 2004. The museum has a rich collection of about 200,000 specimens of diversified organisms including birds, insects, mammals, amphibians, fish, invertebrates and other animal specimens, as well as seeds, ferns, mosses, algae and other plant specimens. The platypus specimen in the museum is one of the only three in the country, while there are more than 100 specimens of national first- and second-class protected animals, such as giant panda, golden monkey, Chinese sturgeon, Yangtse crocodile, ibis and sunbird. In addition, there are dozens of “type specimens” (i.e. specimens named for the first time by humans) in the specimen collection. The museum also has a wide variety of biological multimedia videos, which helps visitors understand the stories “behind” the plant and animal specimens more directly and deeply.
